Presenters:  Members of the CCC Academic Senate Technology Commitee and friends!

Description:  This session was held to brainstorm ideas for a possible senate position paper about what are the best practices in online courses.  Participants will be presented with a description of issues that have surfaced regarding maintaining quality instruction and learning in online courses.  Recent skepticism has developed among some of our transfer institutions regarding the integrity of CCC online courses.  In an effort to strengthen the integrity of online education in our own system, this session was planned as a precursor to a strong position paper recommending techniques and methodologies that insure the quality of our online programs.

Ideas for discussion:

1. We should solidify what we think about redesigning for the online environment vs. capturing what we do exactly from the on ground classroom setting.

2. Differences between modular course content vs. unique course content (like the difference between modules that are created by a group of faculty members or even just one, but facilitated by many as the university of Phoenix module vs. what we do as independent faculty developers)

3. What we know:

a. That students come usually from our district in the first place.

b. That convenience is the prime motivator for taking online courses, NOT necessarily self motivated learning.

c. Our own identity as teachers when it comes to quality.

More information about this topic will be added to this page after the session on Friday.
